There are lots of amazing islands surrounding the coast of North Wales. Most of them were cut off from mainland Wales after the last warm period 7000 years ago (following the ice age), which increased the sea level by about 100m. We have a list of some of the most scenic islands for you to explore. With many apartments North Wales on offer, you could be exploring here every weekend!
Ynys Y Fydlyn – Llanfachraeth
This lovely island is at the North-Western tip of Anglesey, looking towards the skerries lighthouse only a mile out. Ynys Y Fydlyn has an interesting shipwreck out the side of the bay of an American transport ship. Keen diver? Take your kit and get exploring.
This area has many interesting spots nearby too, including the ‘Porth Wen Brickworks’ – A Victorian brickworks where they used to make fire bricks.
Ynys Llanddwyn – Aberfraw
This is one of the most well-known Islands on Anglesey, where the patron Saint of Lover is said to have lived. The island has the remains of an Abbey and dwellings, and also is home to an old lighthouse, cottages, and the most beautiful little beaches. Check the tide is ready for you to visit!
To get to the island, walk along Newborough beach. You can find volcanic rocks, and a picturesque forest along the way.
Ynys Lawd, South Stack Lighthouse – Holyhead
This island is home to Southstack lighthouse, a waymark for coastal traffic. You can experience the lighthouse by following 400 steps down to the island.
This island is surrounded by interesting geology, and is the perfect place to watch for sea birds – so remember to bring your binoculars.
Ynys Enlli, Bardsey Island – Aberdaron
Ynys Enlli, well known as Bardsey Island is located by the coast of Aberdaron – you can take just a quick boat trip over from next to the fishing port. This quaint little island has been visited for thousands of years.
The place holds not only lots of history, but was also declared a National Nature Reserve in 1985 due to its amazing wildlife. Book a day trip here to escape.
Mochras, Shell Island – Llanbedr
Shell Island first started as a farm, dating as far back as 1086, but is now actually the largest campsite in the whole of the UK. This is the perfect place to stay if you want a weekend to get away from it all. It’s basically wild camping, so you can spark up a fire on the beach and relax. Being by the sea is also great for your health!
